Director Ahn Jae Hun’s <Gill> has been officially selected for the 2024 Annecy International Film Festival’s Contrechamp Competition category.

Following his previous films, "Green Days" (Selected in Feature Competition, 2011) and "The Shaman Sorceress" (Contrechamp Jury Distinction, 2020), Ahn will present his film at the Annecy International Film Festival for the third time.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, by Gu Byeong-mo, “Gill” is an animated feature film that tells the story of "Gon," a boy who sprouts gills from his body on the verge of death, and of the hurt people around him. When the film was announced, Ahn stated that he “started the film with the thought that the scars left on our body and mind eventually become the gills that help us breathe." He also mentioned that he hopes the film will “spark a thought in people’s minds to look into their own gills.”.

Returning to Annecy this year with "Gill," Ahn expressed that he hopes the audience can feel “the unique imagery of Korean animation” as well as "the way a Korean director portrays people and society.” through the film.

This will be the very first time after the pandemic that Ahn and his staff will visit Annecy to attend the festival in person and to continue his tradition of drawing audiences’ faces at his film screenings.
